There once was an aerobics instructor in Cali, Colombia named Beto. One day he forgot to bring his music to class, so he played salsa and merengue instead. And so Zumba® Fitness was born! (The word comes from Colombian slang and means to move fast, like a bee.) Beto moved to Miami and founded Zumba® Fitness in 2001. What began as a local fitness craze is now a global phenomenon, with 12 million people taking Zumba® Fitness classes every week in 125 countries!

Think of the last time you danced at a party or concert. You weren’t calculating how much longer you had to go. You were just enjoying the music! This is why Zumba® Fitness has been called “exercise in disguise.” And since it’s not a dance class, there are no mistakes!

Zumba® Fitness is an intermittent cardiovascular training method, in which songs alternate between higher and lower intensity. Depending on your body composition and effort, you could burn up to 800 calories in a one-hour class. Be sure to bring a water bottle and wear sneakers, preferably ones with less grip than a running shoe, which will allow for pivoting and lateral motion.
